ROUGH CLOSE BRONZE AGE SITES
Rough Close Settlement Grid ref SO 25 61 This area has produced a high concerntration
of finds, mostly flints from the Mesolithic to the Bronze Age. Together with
the proximity of other sites listed below, there is a strong possibility that
a settlement or workplace once existed here. Neolithic ?, Bronze Age ? SMR ref

Ring ditch Grid ref SO 253 612 Ring ditch or Round Barrow approx 25m diameter,
bisected by enclosure ditch line (see below). It may post-date the enclosure.

Rough Close enclosure/pit alignments group of sites Grid ref SO 253 612. A multiple
site for pit alignments and an enclosure seen as a cropmark. C14 dating from
the primary silts of the ditch produced the result 3390+/-70BP (SWAN-21). (Gibson,
A 1995f, 48). SMR ref 2481

UPPER NINEPENCE BARROW
Barrow Grid ref SO 251 613 A buried feature excavated in 1994 by CPAT. The excavation
revealed an underlying Neolithic house beneath the barrow about 5m diameter
with internal central hearth and a circular enclosure around 12 metres in diameter,
and is presumably contemporary with the settlement. The latter was delimited
by a close-set ring of stakeholes. (Gibson, A 1994e, 52). Carbon 14 date from
a pit containing Peterborough pottery and within the area defined by house wall
was 4470+/-80BP (SWAN-23). C14 date from hearth 4240+/-70BP (SWAN-24). C14 dates
from pits BM-2966 4410+/-35BP BM-2967 4400+/-50BP BM-2968 4160+/-35BP BM-2969
4050+/-35BP The charred plant remains included hazelnut fragments, cereal grain,
chaff and weed seeds. C14 date from post-hole of the perimeter of the enclosure

HINDWELL / HINDWELL ASH
Hindwell Ash Ring ditch. Grid ref SO 258 607 Very indistinct ring ditch. Double
ditched 16m diameter SMR ref 33148
Barrow I. Grid ref SO 257 611. The Barrow is 36m diameter, 1.1m high with an
OS triagulation pillar just off its centre. Finds have been ploughed from surface.
An excavation in 1993 discovered severe plough damage. The turf built barrow
was encircled by a ditch. Postholes in the natural subsoil below the mound produced
charcoal - C14 date of 3730 +/- 70BP (CAR-1480). The Postholes may have formed
a rectangular structure; two hearths surmounting the mount produced dates of
1970+/-60BP (CAR-1481) attesting to Iron Age or Roman re-use. (Gibson, A 1993e,
56). SMR ref 307
Barrow II. Grid ref SO 253 606. This Barrow is 34m diameter and 1m high and
is on a natural rise. Flints have been ploughed out from the surface. A survey
was done in 1992 and more flints were recovered (Gibson, A 1993e, 55). SMR ref

Hindwell barrow II |
Barrow III Grid ref SO 252 609. A double ditched barrow, 36m in diameter and 1.1m high, overlying a central pit. An arrowhead was ploughed from the surface. The Barrow was surveyed in December 1992. There were Flint finds from mound (Gibson, A 1993e, 55). C14 date from charcoal from a hearth situated on top of the mound 1640+/-70BP (SWAN-115). A physical and geophysical survey was carried out over this barrow as part of the SEPAH project in 1998. It was demonstrated to have a triple ring-ditch and a circle of extremely high magnetic anomalies underneath the periphery of the mound. the pit circle may be the remains of an in-situ burnt structure (Gibson, A M & Jones, N W, 1998). Court Farm Ring Ditch II Grid ref SO 255 625 Another ring ditch identified from
an aerial photo (CPAT, 1995).(And possibly a third ring ditch to the south of
I and II). Thought to be Bronze Age SMR ref 7958 SEE ALSO EVENJOBB
Court Farm Barrow Grid ref SO 251 599 A cropmark of a ring ditch 19m diameter,

found nothing visible on the ground.Bronze Age ? SMR ref 373
Court Farm Barrow I Grid ref SO 256 622 This round barrow has been spread. 28m N-S by 30m E-W. The spreading has reduced the height to 0.7m. Three flints were ploughed out of the surface in 1973, these included a fire-cracked knife. Bronze Age SMR ref 300
Court Farm Barrow I |
Court Farm barrow II Grid ref SO 258 621 This barrow measures 36m N-S by 38m E-W. It is 1m high and heavily ploughed. It was Surveyed in December 1992 when flints were found from the mound. (Gibson, E 1993e, 55). Slight mound visible. Bronze Age SMR ref 303
Court Farm Barrow II |
Court Farm gyrus Grid ref SO 252 599 A circular cropmark of a one ditched
enclosure about 100m diameter. It is alledgedly a Roman Gyrus associated with
the nearby fort and camps, but could be an older feature relating to the WALTON
PIT ALIGNMENT. Date unclear. SMR ref 375

1.8m high. The barrow is on top of a small knoll and is crossed by the fence/hedge
line on the NW where there is some erosion from animals. Flints have been recovered
from the ploughed section of the mound. The barrow was surveyed in Dec 1992.

Walton Barrow I Grid ref SO 249 597 A double concentric ring ditch approx. 35m

CROSSWAY
Crossway Ring Ditch Grid ref SO 236 603 A circular ring ditch about 20m in diameter.
It covers a central pit. The site, set on the flood plain of Summergil Brook,
shows an internal cross on the mound: This is thought to be the possible base
of a (later ?) windmill. Thus age of site uncertain Bronze Age or modern ? SMR
