This mound, located on the A44 between Walton and New Radnor is something of a mystery in that it is not known which era of history it comes from. There are two possibilities : The first is that it is a prehistoric site due to its proximity to the Bronze age stone circle and various tumuli or burial mounds in this area. Also the descovery of the Hindwell Palisade in the 1990's implies that there was alot of Bronze age activity around here. Other factors which support this are a complete lack of documentary evidence from later eras relating to it, and no evidence of any stonework directly on the mound, both of which might discount the second possibility which is that it is a Norman motte. Its siting near to a stream to the N and the probability that any ruined stone works would have been reused in the construction of the adjacent farmhouse and outbuildings support this second theory. The area is also very rich in Norman castles, there being 9 or 10 other known sites in this small valley.
