DITCH BANK

Ditch Bank is along the line of the hedge and trees between the hills in the centre-ground. It is not known as to whether the earthwork was put up to protect settlements on the Welsh side of Offa's Dyke or thrown up by an English army retreating from some foray into Wales. What is clear is that it would have been very difficult to pass the fortification cross-country as valleys like this would have offered the easiest and sometimes the only route between steep hills, especially for armies on the move. The prevalence of English place names between this and Offa's Dyke is also perhaps a clue to its purpose.
