King of England :
Henry III 1216-72 Background information : The 1260's saw the Welsh move back into Maelienydd and Elfael and further afield right into the Marcher 'home' territories. This began in 1260 when the Welsh advanced down the Teme valley and sacked Knighton. In 1262 this was followed by a rebellion in Maelienydd in which Roger Mortimer and his allies were trapped at Cefnllys castle to the NW whilst the Welsh under Llewelyn ap Gruffydd continued their advance into Radnorshire the final destruction of Bleddfa, Norton and Presteigne castles occured at this time. The attacks continued across the Marches with Llywelyn and his men taking New Radnor, Richards Castle to the E and laying seige to Wigmore by 1264. Elfael joined the rebellion and Llywelyn was now in an extremely strong position. The Marchers had been distracted by the internal threat of civil war in England between Simon Montfort and Henry. |

A baronial revolt had occured in which initialy only Roger Mortimer in this area supported the King and Prince Edward, who were both captured by Montfort after the battle of Lewes in 1264. Roger Mortimer helped Edward to escape from custody in Hereford to continue the Royal cause. An amazing treaty between Llywelyn, Montfort and his prisoner Henry was agreed in 1265 which recognised Llywelyn as 'Prince of Wales' and confirmed most of the territory he had won. The same year at the battle of Evesham Roger Mortimer and Prince Edward joined now by other Marchers who were disappointed at the Crowns inability to help them regain their lands from Llywelyn crushed the baronial rebellion at the battle of Evesham. Montforts head was sent to Rogers wife as a present. Another treaty of 1267 confirmed most of the terms of that of 1265 and it is probable that New Radnor came back to Mortimer control as part of one of these agreements. |
