King of England :
Henry III 1216-72
Background information :
Hugh Mortimer tried various means both violent and legal to get back into Maelienydd but Llewelyn ap Iorwerth was intransigent and Knighton and Norton remained firmly under his control. Iorwerths other enemy in the area was his former ally Reginald Braose who also had claims on Iorwerth-held territories. These were taken up by William Braose (III) after the death of Reginald in 1228 and a period of constant war followed which would go on until 1234. Llywelyn seems to have prevailed in this in some ways and lost in others. Around 1227-8 he captured William Braose, son of Reginald, and shortly after invaded Radnorshire, now under Crown control. commanded by Roger Vaughan ap Einion Clud went on and took Elfael, also from The Crown. Whilst he was away it appears that his prisoner, William Braose and his wife Princess Joan (daughter of King John) got it together and had a bit of a dalliance. Llywelyn found out about it and his response was to execute Braose in 1230. It is not known exactly how he took it out on his wife. Meanwhile disquiet had developed in various places where Welsh Kings and Princes who had previously held their lands from The Crown, now decided that they were not that happy with Iorwerths domination over their territories, which seemed to them to be more or less dispossession posing as nationalism.
