King of England :
Henry I 1100-35
Background information :
During the reign of Henry I the area generaly enjoyed relatively peaceful times between the Welsh and the Normans. King Henry, on the other hand frequently took action to clip the wings of the Marchers and installed his 'own men' in their places wherever possible. Philip Braose was dispossesed in 1110 - 12 and his lands were taken over by Pain fitz John, a strong supporter of Henry who had been based to the S around Painscastle. He was also known as 'Monoculus' - one eye. Later in the decade it is probable that he also took control of the Mortimer lands on behalf of

the Crown following a failed rebellion in Normandy involving Stephen of Aumale who was married to Ralphs daughter Hawise. Monoculus retained an important position as Henry's right-hand man in the central border lands until the Kings death in 1135.
In Herefordshire there was an update of the Doomsday book called the Lindsay survey of 1115 and this shows that by this time the Mortimers had lost quite alot of land since 1086. It is even possible that they were exiled in 1118-19 or 27-29 by Henry until the end of his reign because there is no further mention of them in records or documents as being in this area or holding land here until about 1136-40.
