King of England :
William II 'Rufus' 1087 - 1100 Background information : At the begining of the 1090's the Normans set about occupation of both Maelienydd and Elfael. Involved in this were Ralph Mortimer who had the Cantref of Maelienydd under his control by 1094, and Ralph Tosny of Hay who took teritory to the S in Elfael. Another Marcher Lord, William Braose, who was in control of the neighbouring Cantref of Buellt (around Builth) had arrived in this area after being given lands to the SE by William Rufus during one of his hand-outs of territory in the early 1090's. For Braose these gains were short-lived as he died the following year and his estates passed to his son Philip. The construction of castles soon followed in the newly aquired areas. occured all along the Welsh border
and led to a backlash. During 1094 much of the Norman gains in both
the S and N of the country were recaptured by the Welsh although the
revolt does not seem to have reached this area. In 1095 another Baronial
revolt broke out which prevented concerted Norman defence so the Welsh
resurgence continued more or less unabated. In 1096 the SE of Wales
joined the revolt against the Normans who, under pressure from the whole
of Wales now, were finally defeated in the N and mostly driven out of
the S by 1098. Against this background the central Marcher Lords were
enjoined by the Church to hand back some of their Welsh gains and chose
to do so.
