Staunton
As part of the Arrow Valley Project in 2003 a pair of ditches were excavated in the Arrow valley bottom at Upper Headlands. They appeared to overlay an earlier feature but are of great interest themselves. They are thought to be Iron Age which is unusual as nearly all other surviving Iron Age sites are hillforts of which Wapley is the nearest, overlooking this part of the Arrow valley. It is postulated that this large scale site consisting of the two concentric ditches which circle a small gravel pronomotory on or near to the riverbank is a site possibly connected with Iron Age funerary rituals. It is thought that Iron Age 'burials' were likely to be in or near rivers, burial mounds were not used during this period, in fact burials are extremely rare. Also many precious objects and hoards from this period are found near rivers which appear to have been sacred to the people. The site appears to have been in ritualistic use since the Neolithic period.
A full report has recently been published by Herefordshire Archaeology. For details see the bibliography section.
