Burfa
Hillfort Grid ref SO 285 610 Multivallate contour fort. Oblique barbican entrance on north-east. Roman pottery ploughed from interior. About 20 acres enclosed. Seems to have had secondary as well as primary defences. Area now thickly forested so difficult to understand ramparts (Gregory, D, 1994, 16). Banks covered with turf and scrub and trees planted in interior. Defences on the south side consist of a bank between 0.75-1.5m high with an exterior ditch c.0.9m deep. On the north side there are 2 banks rising to a height of c.3.5m with a exterior ditch 6m below the level of the bank (Cadw, 1998). Interior of hillfort now being managed as open space. Trees have been felled and there are no plans to replant.

Cropmark I Grid ref SO 252 597 Rectangular enclosure 58.3m WSW-ENE 36.7m NNW-SSE with annex to WSW 34.9m WSW-ENE. Single ditched with no apparent entrance. Possibbly part of some extra-mural settlement relating to roman marching camps (PRNs 370 371 372) to north. Mis-sited by OS, 1982. Possible 2nd enclosure abuts on E. Outlying cropmarks to E and over lying ones on N side. Apparent axial linear probably recent drainage feature. Ring ditch PRN 33129 underlies the northern part. Iron Age ?, Roman ? SMR ref 5133

Hindwell
Enclosure I Grid ref SO 239 606 Single ditched sub-rectangular enclosure with entrance to NE 44.6m N-S 60.3mE-W Sited on flood plain Two trenches were excavated by CPAT to assess plough damage and attempt to recover dating evidence. Trench A measured 7.75 x 9m and was situated over the entrance causeway, and trench B was 10 x 3m andwas located on the west curving ditch. The enclosure ditch was found to be V-shaped, 2.15m wide and 1m deep. 6 small pits were also excavated. All features were badly truncated. Ceramic evidence confirms the middle Iron Age date (Gibson, A, 1999, 26-9). Iron Age SMR ref 4222

Knapp Farm
Enclosure Grid ref SO 244 599 Rectilinear enclosure visible on RCAHMW AP895040/19-20. 80m E-W 70m N-S Entrance in SE corner. Slightly rhomboid in shape. A trench measuring 11 x 3m was excavated by CPAT in 1995, across the line of the enclosure ditch. The ditch had originally been v-shaped and was 1.15m deep. It had been re-cut at some point. No dateable finds were recovered (Gibson, A, 1999, 25-6). Probably Iron Age SMR ref 3664

The earthwork feature in the centre of the picture above was seen in a field to the rear of Knapp farm in 2003. There is what appears to be a circular bank and ditch. I have been unable to corroborate this with a known historic site. The feature shows up on this aerial photo.
