EVANCOYD (NEWCASTLE) MOTTE

This motte is in the grounds of Evancoyd House and is set upon a ridge-end overlooking the route from Evenjobb to Cascobb, Discoed and Pilleth. It has been suggested that it was built to protect the Radnor plain area from attack via a mountain route from Wales. Such an attack is recorded by Cadwallon ap Madog at nearby Ednol sometime before 1179. The castle is thought to have had a stone tower or shell keep but little more is known of it or its tenants, although it is classified as part of the Radnor Lordship and as such would have been under the control of the Braose family between about 1100-1200.
