CABAL MOTTE

This motte is rather secluded, not being adjacent to any roads so one must follow a footpath or two to see it. Its beautiful location is in a natural bowl and presumably it would have been defended by a wet moat which still fills up after rainy weather. It is likely to be 11th or 12th century in origin.

A short distance to the NE, next to the lane below Strangworth farm is another possible fortification. A ditch surrounds a natural (?) area of high ground for about 260 degrees of a circle. The lane intersects the site which may be why no ditch is visible on the S side. A speculative site, impossible to date.
