UPPER LYE

The ancient enclosure near the hamlet of Upper Lye can be found in Camp Wood above the Lyepole bridge across the Lugg. It consists of a deep ditch on three sides surrounding a high bank which in turn surrounds a central area. The south side of the site juts out on a spur high above the river, commanding a fantastic view of the Lugg valley. There is an entrance on the NW side. This dramatic site is most likely to be Norman in origin. There are said to be other medieval earthworks in this area relating to the remains of a village, long since deserted.
