CASTLE NIMBLE

This motte and bailey site is located in the valley to the north of Old Radnor. Its proximity to a stream would indicate that it was probably moated. Not much is known of its history but it is most likely to have been constructed after the Norman conquest and would have probably been built in stone due to its defensively weak position. The ring of trees growing on it are further possible evidence of a stone structure, as this tends to be a sign of the lime used in mortar on which the trees feed however on a visit to the site I found no trace of stone anywhere on the mound itself nor amongst the associated earthworks, despite a tree having been uprooted along one of the ramparts. Another bank and ditch run towards Old Radnor church which possibly indicates a connection between these sites.
