Kings
of England :
Richard I 'Lionheart' 1189-99 John 1199-1216 Background information : During the 1190's the Welsh were beset by infighting. Einion o'r Porth was killed by one of his brothers in 1191. Two years later his heir, Anarawd siezed two of his brothers, Hywel and Madog and gouged their eyes out in a bitter succession feud. In 1194 Rhys ap Gruffydd was attacked at Rhayader by Maelgwn of Maelienydd who destroyed the castle there for the second time within a few years. Across the border King Richards chancellor William Longchamp had beseiged and taken Wigmore castle on the grounds that Roger Mortimer had been in league with the Welsh, or more likely Prince John. Roger apparently fled to the continent but resolved the problem by 1194 when he is recorded with the King at Winchester. The Chandos family of Knighton-Norton were also dispossesed after a failed rebellion and their estates were passed to William Braose who fortified them |

against the Welsh in 1192-3.
A major campaign, financed by the Crown was launched in 1195, during which
New Radnor was regained for William Braose, Roger Mortimer extended his
territory in Maelienydd and Bleddfa castle was rebuilt by Hugh fitz Richard,
now using the de Say name. Rhys ap Gruffydd counter-attacked in 1196 and
took back territory to the S and New Radnor. A combined relief Marcher
army was defeated in the valley to the W of the town. Rhys died of the
Plague in 1197 followed by Maelgwn in 1198, whose much diminshed kingdom
passed to one of his sons Meredydd. Curiously another son, Madoc married
Rose, Roger Mortimers daughter. After Rhys's death the Welsh rallied briefly
around another leader called Gwenwynwyn who besieged Painscastle. A relief
force was sent under Geofrey fitz Peter of Hay and in the resulting battle
the Welsh were heavily defeated, losing a reported 3000 men including
Anarawd ap Einion Clud and Owain ap Cadwallon, brother of Maelgwn.
