King of England :
Henry II 1154-89 Background information : In 1160 Cadwallon apprehended his younger brother Einion Clud, siezed his lands and sent him prisoner to Henry who allowed him to escape and fined Cadwallon who despite this appears to have hung onto Maelienydd and Elfael. In 1161-2 Hugh Mortimer accompanied Henry on a campaign on the continent and managed to recover his estates in Normandy. Around this time, and probably during their absence Cadwallon, aided by Rhys ap Gruffydd, King of Deheubarth 1155-97, and possibly Einion Clud moved E and took Bleddfa where they destroyed the castle and |

Henry invaded N Wales in 1165 but was defeated at Corwen in Powys by a
united Welsh army, partly under Cadwallon and Einion Clud, his former
allies. While they were away Hugh Mortimer marched back into Maelienydd
in an attempt to retake what he saw as his family's ancestral lands. Henry,
who had always openly distrusted the Marcher Lords, and particularly Hugh
Mortimer in view of his former support for King Stephen during the 'Anarchy'
of 1135-54 was surprisingly enraged at this act of unauthorised private
warfare but he chose only to fine Hugh, allbeit heavily. Hugh didn't pay
up and avoided the bailiffs moving in, probably again on account of the
resurgent Welsh threat following Henrys defeat.
